A chilly winter train ride along the Adriatic on the Orient Express? A balcony breakfast in the South of France? A house party in the wilds of the English countryside? It all conjures just one thing: an elegant dressing gown. Although my fascination with Agatha Christie is hardly limited to loungewear, it does add a little zing to the proceedings. I adore Christie’s wit, her settings, her longing. And I admire her rich characterizations that whisper rather than shout. Of course the clothes must play a part.

A Lift

No, not that kind of lift. Rather, the fleeting effervescent feeling one gets when something nice happens. For example, when one knows that chocolate is in the desk drawer, that the haircut is this afternoon, that the refund check has arrived. Or when one receives an unexpected compliment, a day off, a spectacular invitation. Another excellent formula for a lift is to try on scarves.

As I look back on my fashion life, a riot of experimentation, I can see why someone might opt for a neutral wardrobe. But not for long. Can we conduct the art de vivre without a bit of color? I don’t want to. I want it all. Especially the sapphires, peonies, etc. of Jane’s Vanity. So therapeutic just to own. But, the actual wearing may require a bit of advice for a magpie such as I. My only rule seems to be: Does this color make me happy? Yes, it does.

Fishnet Catch

Two European hosiery lines have shaped me into a devotee of fishnets. I wouldn’t be without these special stockings, and needn’t be, because they are amazingly sturdy. Suitable for any season, they insulate, yet allow air circulation. And, perhaps most importantly, they look fabulous! The open diamond weave, in whatever color, accentuates and perfects. I was not always a fishnet girl. But Jane’s Vanity somehow caught me up and encouraged me to be adventurous. To my amazement, fishnets seem to go with everything and have a certain subtlety.

Each change of season poses a challenge for getting dressed. And often leaves me feeling as if my closet is empty. Fall is especially alarming. First, because it is cold. Second, because the bright autumn light starkly points out items in need of attention or a fond farewell. But, as I recreate my look each season, I resist the urge to dress by the numbers. Fashion formulas abound: one this, one that, and so on. It makes me crazy. Instead, I just try to acquire things I love. Jane’s Vanity provides clothes that are beyond formulaic. It’s that time of year. Dress up! For Hallowe’en or winter parties or just for fun. And this year I have the solution for all. A tiara. I had never dreamed of owning my own, until need for a child’s gift sent me to a toy store. What a revelation. My errand forgotten, I stared in amazement at a wall of tiaras that did not require a home mortgage to purchase. And what better way to set it off than with lovely lingerie? Float in for cocktails wearing your little tiara to accent Christine Vancouver’s elegant silk “Diva Gown” in deep red. Or, as a nod to jewelry, her “Faberge” in blue-purple.

Was Lord Byron speaking of food or flirtation when he wrote those lines? Perhaps both. Dinner, the art thereof, is complicated. Where to dine? When? Diane Johnson, in her delightful Le Divorce, schools Americans in the French concept of dinner “after,” rather than “before.” Much easier to focus on the food, I suppose. And such excellent food. But, whichever, one must look one’s seductive and vibrant best at table. Decolletage can be quite low. Conversation more elevated. What a wonderful opportunity to dress up a bit and have a lovely time.

Acquisition of an elegant new bra set piques my interest in lace. I hold the material up to the light and admire the design. Flowers, yes, but also leaves. The images are perfect, slightly raised, frosted with an iridescent gleam. They change in size from tiny to bold, contrasting with the chaste netting that sets them off. There is a rhythm to the design, it undulates. I feel as if I’m having a conversation with someone out there.

My little style library constantly changes, but three longer titles are “core.” Although not new, they stand out among my treasured assortment of fashion and design books. I'm on a flight from Istanbul to Dubai. We are just now crossing the Sea of Marmara, & yesterday we were yachting in the Black Sea. East - West, & two different seas, connected by the Bosporus straits; quite an amazing place. I've been traveling between Europe & Saudi Arabia for the past five weeks, & I'm congratulating myself on a job well done, in terms of packing for this trip.

For me, part of the fun of travel is to test my wardrobe planning. Were my selections brilliant? Did I wear every single thing? Did I fit right in to wherever I was going, with a little zing? Even though the season has wound down, I am in the summer dance mode of Despacito, the musical phenomenon from Puerto Rico. The video, filmed in the romantically gritty La Perla neighborhood of Old San Juan, has hit the 3 billion mark (and counting) for viewings on YouTube. It is a mesmerizing dance number, sexy and full of joy. Its composer and singer, Luis Fonzi, celebrates the movement, dancing, and rhythm of Latin America that he says are “engraved on my bones.”
