Manhattan

Rodgers and Hart wrote the song “Manhattan” for a Broadway musical in 1925. The lyrics provide a tongue-in-cheek travelogue for two poor kids who can’t afford a vacation from town. The song has been a standard for almost 100 years. And it inspires us to take an imaginary trip to Old New York, dressed in JV’s finest. Songstress Lee Wiley might provide accompaniment:

We’ll have Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten, Island too, it’s lovely going through, the zoo…

In Olivia Von Halle’s Aureta Heaven Dress in teal silk patterned with flowers and creatures.

And tell me, what street, compares with Mott Street, in July? Sweet pushcarts gently gliding by…

and you in your Klements Lucid Frieda Dress in hand-drawn pattern of orange, green, yellow, blue, and white.

The subway charms us so, where balmy breezes blow, to and fro…

to ruffle your Morpho + Luna Colette Aqua Pajamas in a print of orchids, butterflies, and hummingbirds on robins egg blue silk.

We’ll bathe at Brighton, the fish you’ll frighten, when you’re in, your bathing suit so thin…

better take along the Regency Stripe Maxi Robe from Violet & Wren. Full-length silk charmeuse, cuffed crop sleeves, patch pockets, high side slits.

We’ll go to Yonkers, where true love conquers, in the wild…

and you’ll look pretty in Grazia’lliani’s Chartreuse Floral Pajamas.

In Central Park we’ll stroll, where our first kiss we stole, soul to soul…

the perfect backdrop for Violet & Wren’s Evergreen Bias Slip with its fancy shoulders and long lines.

We’ll turn Manhattan, into an isle of joy…
