Adventures in Purple

Deep purple is a seductive color, especially for lingerie. It suggests smoldering Victorian bosoms, gothic plot lines, high-heeled booties. You the plucky heroine who escapes into the night on horseback. Or the velvet-clad woman of the world who strolls the flea markets at dawn. Jane’s Vanity weaves a story of purple.

From ancient through Byzantine times, beautiful “Tyrian Purple” was worn only by rulers. The source of its cachet was its rarity; the little mollusks who produced the dye could only make so much. Interest eventually waned. But, in 1856, a young British chemist created a synthetic aniline purple dye that changed the fashion scene. Purple became the rage, available to all, a flattering and interesting alternative to black. Its romantic aura continues, a bit mysterious, a bit boudoir. This season, Lise Charmel has a purple passion.

The Dressing Floral Indien Lingerie Set pairs textural aubergine Guipere embroidery with sheer mesh and tulle. Stunning alone or to layer with the slinky matching Chemise in Devoré (burnout) silk.

A lighter purple makes us smile with the Rêve Orchidée Lingerie Set in mauve stretch Leavers lace with embroidered flowers in shades of red, pink, white, purple, orange, and green. Festive worn with the matching Camisole under a steampunk blazer or over a ruffly party skirt.

Purple feels private, slightly unconventional, assured. A great combination for sophisticated winter stories from Jane’s Vanity..
