The Story of a Remnant

Merel Zwart, the Amsterdam-based designer of Merle Noir, has long made use of small quantities of materials. Her background in dance costume encouraged her search for remnants. She strolled flea markets and little shops, hoping to find that unique something. Now, with her own lingerie atelier, she continues, on her own or through a network of friends, to seek out special fabrics and lace. As she writes to us, “I work with a contact in Paris who buys leftover fabrics directly from the brands once they finish a collection and move in the next season (sometimes also from older collections). The Valentino fabric I used for the wrap dress actually came from a store in Amsterdam. Printed fabrics are usually protected for a few years and once the license expires they can sometimes be released in small quantities. The store (in Amsterdam) that sometimes has designer print fabrics from Valentino is Nanucci Tissuti… people can visit.”
Thus, Zwart connected with the exquisite remnant that would become the central feature of The Valentino Silk Wrap Dress. It sold out at JV almost immediately this fall. But, don’t worry, Zwart has crafted another precious remnant into the Lanvin Ombre Silk Robe. Its kimono shape shows off the fabric’s graduated color change from darkest black at shoulders to vibrant teal at hem. Think of moonlight on ocean waves. One size fits many. It could become the beginning of your own collection of remnants brought to glory.
