The Daily Air

Diana Vreeland said that “fashion is part of the daily air.” In the sense that what people wear is a sign of the times–and what might be coming. Jane and Emily sense the vibe as they make their selections for JV. Let’s imagine what the fall/winter collection is conveying.

After clicking through the new arrivals at JV, I see these characteristics: nostalgia, grace, dreaming, strength. A prescription for the times, I think/hope. All of which are wrapped up in Karolina Laskowska’s Helianthus Balconette Set. Often Laskowska’s creations are named for flowers. This time it is the sunflower, in honor of Sophie Hallette’s L’idéale caramel-colored lace and metallic corded trim. The flattering balconette shape, the sheerness, the scalloped lace at underbust and boyshort all speak to a dream of resilience, passion, and beauty.

Nostalgia is in the air at Christine Vancouver with the Fabergé Moss Silk and Velvet Collection in chartreuse green. This is not the nostalgia of Boho Chic, but rather of early 20th century French couturiers, such as Paul Poiret, who recalled Byzantium. Vibrant, fluid and layerable, these pieces give the wearer a sense of calm, assurance, and freedom. Choose the “burn-out” Moss Silk Velvet Gown, Robe, and Pant. Then mix with the Silk Gown and Top.

Grace is important right now, as we walk a complex path. Show it by wearing sensational hosiery from Pierre Mantoux. Such a simple thing begins the day in a special way. I can’t wait to add a splash with colorful socks: the Adena in black and orange botanical print, the Soma Bordeaux Plaid, the Gwen in lurex and blue paisley, the Sanna Floral on black or bronze background. Or sometimes I’ll groove to the Joey Stay Ups in sultry black.

Dreaming. In the documentary Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel (2011), Diana reminds us that “the only very good life is the one that you know you want and that you make for yourself.” The precious time we have for dreaming and scheming is enhanced by Layalina. Just in: The Nana Chartreuse Silk Pajama that, with its ivory lace appliqué, embodies the realization of dreams. The set was created exclusively for JV!

Strength. Current fashion is bold and swaggering. No holds barred. Sometimes complicated. But strength shines through in a perfect “basic.” Vannina Vespirini gives us the Ocean Midi Skirt in navy. Its shirred back waist will always fit. Its length will work with flats or boots or sandals. I could wear it every day. When the JV crew found this piece, they snapped it up. Then, for good measure, added the Vannini’s fortifying Ocean and Black Silk Gown.

Life’s energy is all around, and we want to absorb it–with style. Our own style, with a hint of Jane’s Vanity.
