Through elegant silhouettes that enhance the intricate details of French laces and Italian silks, Merle Noir designs luxurious pieces inspired by the intricacies of flowers, radiating a romantically nostalgic essence —an homage to the Dutch flower fields of the designer's home. EXQUISITE LACES FROM FRANCE

Merle Noir works with lace that falls under the designation Dentelle de Calais-Caudry®, a registered and protected trademark exclusively reserved for a 200-year-old tradition of lace manufactured on Leavers looms by the master lace makers of Calais and Caudry. These manufacturers have an enormous collection of preciously conserved archives at their disposal, of which the oldest date back to the first half of the 19th century.

Merel's lace appliqué technique involves incredible precision and skill, unattainable to all but the most talented of artisans. Each garment is designed around the lace, with a dedication to the placement that will best showcase its unique pattern.

METICULOUS

A one-person business. Every step of the design and couture construction process is completed by Merel Zwart herself. This is an extensive process to deliver a truly perfect product. As the fastidious Merel says, "If I've slept badly or haven't eaten enough and my hands are shaking, I can't do my job".

TO YOUR PERSONAL FORM

The often translucent laces and silks make Merle Noir pieces fragile, fairy-like, intended to fit perfectly like a second skin. Since every piece is made by hand in the Merle Noir atelier, a custom piece takes minimal additional effort.

Jane's Vanity has a curated box with a considerable variation of Merle Noir silks and laces so clients can order a custom made garment through the boutique. Since each bespoke order is a one of a kind, Merle Noir records it with a personalized illustration included in the order as a small token of her appreciation.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Tailoring since age 12, Merel Zwart (designer of Merle Noir) studied at the Artemis Fashion Academy and the Master Tailor Institute before she took on a position as a pattern maker with Müller & Sohn. Later, Merel gained in-depth experience in design and construction for the Dutch National Ballet and couture houses, such as Viktor&Rolf.
