At the Airport with Jane

It’s June, the birthday month of our founder Jane Adams. Where will she travel to celebrate? Only Jane knows. Wherever it is, she’ll be a standout. So, in her honor, we remember how celebrity travel used to be, many birthdays ago. Happy Birthday, Jane! And Bon Voyage!

Back in the day, print media often featured freelance photographs of celebrities, caught off guard at the airport. With travel being much more “tiered” now, such encounters are far less likely. Nevertheless, we dress as if the paparazzi were awaiting us. And, if they call out, “who are you wearing?” We simply reply, “Jane’s Vanity!”

The trick to greeting a phalanx of flashbulbs is to look nonchalant yet fab. We can’t all be Cher, but perhaps we can all wear an unbuttoned blazer with a slinky camisole underneath. Jane is right there with an assortment of embroidered knit tops from Italian label Boglietti. Who wouldn’t snap the shapely Bianca Brown Camisole with its vee neck of chocolate embroidery? Or the Babila in black, with a feast of embroidery across a sheer high neck? Best of all, these tops are a ribbed-knit silk/wool blend that keep us comfortable at 30,000 feet. If we prefer a long sleeve, we strut the Bridget, in grey or black, with its scoop neck of deep macrame flowers. Or the Brianna, an embellished black boat-neck that would carry us directly from the plane to an elegant late supper.

Poor Miranda Priestly had to fly coach in “The Devil Wears Prada 2.” It could happen to anyone. In such a case, we feign invisibility in Aromatique’s Wool Sweater Dress. Its simple black-knit perfection, created in Japan, could only be enhanced by the stealthy sheerness of hosiery from Bresciani, an Italian label new to JV.

But, should a photographer zoom in on our pet, instead of us, we put our foot down! And show off the sheer black polka dot Safra Ankle Sock from Pierre Mantoux. So there.

For that Air France Catherine Deneuve moment, we wear a shy smile, a headband, and a coat draped across our shoulders (which we touch occasionally to show off the jewels on our wrists and fingers). If we don’t fancy mink or leopard for that, we indulge in one of D2Line’s trim little Draped-Back Blouses in Navy or Chartreuse. Love the tiny gold buttons down the front. This wrinkle-resistant piece would look great through a telephoto lens, even after long and crumpling hours in the air.

Onward to the luggage carousel, where we create moments of glory in camera-ready candids from Jane’s Vanity.
